The theme for this year's Recycling Week was 'Rescue Me'. To support this national event we spent Saturday afternoon turning plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, egg cartons, sticks and CDs into wonderful pieces of art.
A helpful tip - if you zap an egg carton in a microwave for a few seconds, they are safe to use!
The children loved mixing ready mixed paint together by shaking it up in a plastic water bottle. Spooning the paint into the bottle proved a challenge but great fun; terrific for hand eye coordination! Cardboard squares were transformed into cheery faces and assorted limbs. The faces were attached by using a wooden coffee stirrer, which was pushed through a slit in the bottle cap. Washi tape was used for decoration and pieces of leather cut into bow ties.
Chalk markers are fabulous for adding striking colour combinations to CDs. Pattern and mark making were encouraged before the CDs were hung together to create beautiful hanging decorations. When the discs moved, they caught the light and sent out lovely reflections.
To reuse cardboard packaging, the children's initials were cut out and decorated with other cardboard 'bits'. Oil and soft pastels were used to personalise the letters and the children had the choice to display their creations by either hanging them up, having them supported or else lent against a wall.
As always, the children had the opportunity to develop their own ideas …
