Abstract Art

We have had a very productive few weeks exploring abstract art. Balbinder Broadbent, a Leeds based artist, has an exhibition on at the Mercer Gallery in Harrogate. We encouraged our families to visit the show to see her work in situ.

Broadbent celebrates shape, line and texture through printing and painting. Using her prints as inspiration, our creative bunch of children enjoyed investigating different ways of making marks. They used string, cotton buds, toothbrushes, card, felt pens and fingers. Once dry, geometric and irregular shapes were cut out and positioned into a variety of compositions. The children came to understand that empty space in a picture is as important as the imagery. Different interpretations arose about what each picture implied. Ideas about space, stag beetles and jelly fish were discussed!

Please slide along the photos below to see the children's final pieces.
